a small brief of my world views in foods.
My experience in Marche Fu Tai
A well known Chinese market in the heart of Cote Des Neiges.
This blog was created for educational purposes. It is a work the must be done and presented to M. Robert Beauchemin for the “Flavours of the World” course at College Lasalle. Where we discuss about the different types of cultures and their gastronomy.
We were asked to go to a Chinese market in Cote Des Neiges. Its a market well known for its variety and prices which attract customers from all over Montreal to buy there.
After a long day of school I went to place cote des neiges to meet my teammates and take a look at this market. I wont say I wasnt interested, since I have worked in kitchens for almost 3 years now. Once we got there we saw that it was quite big compared to other markets around the area and that they used their space very efficiently. There were all types of products from all over the world, even from my native country, Venezuela.
First product I saw was Kimchi, which is a famous korean traditional dish. It is made from fermented vegetables such as cabbage and radish. It has a lot of calories (260 for 60 g) and carbs of 39g in 60g.
The second product it might be the most common one on the list. It’s rice noodles. These noddles were long and big. Quite healthy as well. 160 calories for 50 g and 42 g of carbs for 50g.
The third product is the one that caught my attention the most. Bamboo leaves. It might be simple but it is something I had never seen before so I was pretty impressed. I think they are used for decoration and presentation of plates.
The fourth product were some dark dried mushrooms. I had never expected them to be mushrooms so I was impressed. They seem to be kind of a snack.
The fifth and last product was the one my team brought to class. A bag of candies well known in Montreal. I think I have seen them in all Chinese / Korean restaurants in Montreal. I cant tell what they are made from because I don’t read mandarin or Cantonese, but they are sour and sweet.
